Precious Smile

Sometimes a smile can convey more than words. A smile can complete your day. A smile can give you a good night’s sleep.

A long time ago V, me and 2 other friends went to the Al-Nakheel beach to spend the evening. We packed home cooked food, grabbed some chips a bottle of Pepsi and we drove off to have some good time. It was nothing less than a picnic. Infact it was a picnic.

The Nakheel beach is a beautiful place with lovely parks throughout the stretch of the beach. On either sides of the road you will find families having a good time and kids playing football, flying ‘spiderman’ kites, riding tri-cycles… It is a place full of life. And there is always the appetizing aroma of barbeque in the air.

After a while I wanted to take a walk in the grass, barefoot. I love the feel of grass on my bare feet. V joined me. We then noticed a shadow, from the park lights, of a little girl, not more than 6 years, following us. We turned back and she ran away laughing. I noticed that girl a while ago running around and playing with someone who I thought was her father. She again slowly started walking behind us and we turned back. She seemed to enjoy this small game as she kept doing it and laughing. She gave us 2 pamphlets that she picked up in the park. I made a boat out of it, V made a rocket and gave it to her. She took it and ran away giggling to where her family was sitting.

She kept coming back with more and more such papers and we kept making the same things. She seemed to enjoy it all. She said something in Arabic that we didn’t understand but we knew she was having fun.

We started having our dinner and still the kid kept coming. We offered her to sit with us and eat but she handed over some more papers. We finally served some food in a plate and gave her thinking she will eat. She smiled, said something, took the plate and went back to where her family was sitting. After about 10 minutes, she came again and stood before us extending the plate as if asking for more. She again went back with the plate to where her family was sitting.

After some time, I saw her walking towards us with the plate in her hand and a smile on her lips. I was about to serve her some more food when she said “Khallas. Shukhraan!! Shukhraan!!” (Finished. Thank you!). She left the plate next to me and ran towards the beach, washed her hands, came back to us, gave a contented smile and said something and ran away. We couldn’t follow what she said except for ‘Shukhraan!!’. But her smile conveyed more than her words.

What she did next was so unexpected. As we were packing our stuff and getting ready to leave, she came to me and gave me a small packet which had some leftover popcorn. She shoved it into my hand, again said ‘Shukhraan!’, shook my hand with her innocent smile and ran away.

Yesterday, for some reason I kept remembering the smile on that little girls face. It was priceless! And it made my day. Again.

Pleeease Teachaaaa…

I have recently started giving tuitions to 2 kids, a girl and a boy. They are in class II and U.K.G. respectively. Schools here have reopened after 3 months of vacation. When I agreed to teach them, on the request of their mother, I was glad that I will have something more to do, to kill some time every day. I was excited as teaching is something I have always enjoyed doing.

The boy cries everyday refusing to come to tuition. His mother literally pushes him inside my house. On the first day, when he sat sulking in a corner, I told him I’d give him a cup-cake if he came in and did his home-work. It worked. The next day, to my surprise, he said, “Teachaa, first you give me cake, then I do my home work.” Too smart. I realized soon that he is a ‘born negotiator’ . He has to negotiate for everything and anything. I say, read this spelling aloud 10 times and he will say “Please teachaa, 10 times no reading. Only 5 times.” When I say write One to Twelve, he says ‘Please teachaa, I no write. I tell. Please…please….please…please…” Yeah, he will keep on saying please till he realizes that there is no use.

On the first day, just to brush up, I gave the girl some additions and subtractions.. “2 in the mind, 3 on the fingers. After 2…3, 4, 5.”

I smiled to myself. That was how we all did our additions. She has a whole lot of questions like, “Where you ‘buyed’ this dress teachaa?”, “You know rangoli teachaa?” “For tuition we have summer holidays teachaa?”

It is amazing how kids can surprise us. They all do the same things but in their individual style. Their questions are so innocent and concepts so simple. They don’t even need a joke to laugh. They are always excited about something and have always have something to tell. But soon I realized that teaching some one that young is not as easy as I thought. Their attention span is short and they keep getting restless by the second.

TV is Boring.

Gone are the days of the “Saas Bahu” drama. Now it is reality shows everywhere. Not that the saas bahu serials were any good.
I once, long time ago, did make the mistake of watching 2 episode one of the “K” serials with my aunt. I had no clue what it was about them kept the women folk glued to TV’s. They were so irritating, annoying and ridiculous.

And now reality shows have taken over. They are there on every channel. One hardly get to see a decent entertainer on TV these days. Unless ofcourse you are a sucker for either gross or bitchy stuff.

There is so much bitching and foul language on the show that there is more “beep” than their actual talk. I learnt swear words in college and my little brother in school. Kids these days are probably learning all that in play school itself. The thought itself is horrifying. Contestants are just not tired of bitching about each other. How negative can one be?

And then there are another set of shows which are so gross that make it difficult for me to have a meal if watch it even for a couple of minutes. Cockroaches, spiders, snakes…yukkkk. How the hell can one just let them crawl all over? And that too half naked. Seriously, aren’t the contestants half naked most of the time? I am not prude but am not out of my mind either. I sometimes wonder if all these people are confuse between being modern and being western.

What’s the point of having so many channels when we don’t get decent stuff to watch. I wonder if it because of lack of creativity. TV channels compete in being gross and bitchy and disgusting.
Seriously, TV, these day's is such a bore.

How many other things are we missing?

I am blogging after so long that I almost forgot my blogspot password. I guess I have a tendency to 'shut off' every now and then.

I read the following article, an email forward, I thought I should share it. I don’t know if it is a true story as claimed, but then, it could be.

Washington, DC, Metro Station, on a cold January morning in 2007. The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approximately 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After 3 minutes, a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried to meet his schedule.......

4 minutes later:
The violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.

6 minutes:
A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 minutes:
A 3-year-old boy stopped, but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly.

45 minutes:
The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money, but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.

1 hour:
He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before, Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the Metro Station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities. The questions raised: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this:
If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made.... How many other things are we missing?

Hot And New

A couple of days back, while surfing channels at Tanz’s house, I stopped to watch an interview on a Telugu channel. Actually I stopped to see the guy being interviewed. He looked nice. And then he looked familiar. And then I started thinking aloud “Is this Vamsi?”

“You know him?” Tanz asked.

“This looks like Vamsi. He is from Vizag and he was 1 year my junior in college.”

What impressed me more was the way he spoke in fluent telugu unlike a lot of other new comers who talk as if they were bought up in some foreign country.
Today when I called to talk to my mom I asked her to go see the new movie “Ooha Chitram”. I told her the hero is from Vizag and was my junior.

She said, “Yeah, Vamsi nah. You don’t remember him or what?”

“Remember??? Did I know him?”

“Yes you do. He is Rama aunty’s son. Dr. Rama aunty. You, Raja, Vamsi, Radha, all you guys used to play together.”

Apparently we were neighbors when we were kids. ‘Rama aunty’ does strike a bell but I have no memory of Vamsi Krishna.

Ofcourse there is one new comer with every movie these days but Vamsi Krishna is definitely one good looking guy I have seen in Tollywood in a long time. No, I am not saying this because he is from my home town or because he was my junior. Neither because we played hide and seek as kids. But because I really like his looks. I actually think he is pretty hot!!!

I sure will watch his movie when I get a chance and hope he is a better actor than most of the wannabe’s.

Kisses And A Cake

Giving a surprise to your husband is a challenge in this place. I could never give V a surprise gift in the last, almost 1 and a half years that we have been here. Simply because women cannot go out alone to shop. I tried doing it by secretly buying a shirt or a belt but he would invariably know as he would have to atleast be in the same shop that I enter.

But then, we have friends to help us out right!

Tomorrow, is V’s birthday and I was determined to give him some surprise. I asked my friends, to buy a packet of Hershey’s Kisses (V always wanted to try them but never did for some weird reason) and a Chocolate Cake so I can surprise V at 12 in the night.

I just sneaked out (V is fast asleep) and got the stuff. They surprised me by buying not just a cake but a huge Ice-Cream cake from Baskin Robbins. I am so damn happy and thrilled that finally, with the help of lovely friends, I am able to surprise V.

Thank-you so much Tanz, Taslee and Nidhi!!!

Happy Birthday Sweetheart!!

Away, like always.

I have’nt blogged in a while now. For no particular reason though. I guess I was going through ‘keep your thoughts to your self’ mode. I have been drifting away into the world created by Anita Shreve and Dannielle Steel. After reading The Kite Runner, I couldn’t help but buy copy of A Thousand Splendid Suns. Beautifully written, but, The Kite Runner is the winner.

Turning 30 (last week) has been no big deal. I don’t feel any older. Wiser? Yes! Happier? Yes! More in love with life? Yes! And I am glad! The only disadvantage of turning 30 is being reminded of the fact that my biological clock is ticking. But then, isnt every birthday a reminder of something that you wish could wait longer?

My neighbor who is also my friend, came back last week from India with her 5 month old daughter. The baby is so adorable with a cute little dimple on her right cheek. V and I had planned a surprise and filled a room with balloons, some toys and a chocolate cake for the mother and the baby to cut. The mother and me spend the afternoons together having lunch, watching a movie and playing with the little one.

V and I will be off to India on a 3 week vacation in another 10 days. The freedom from the burkha, being able to walk alone on the road, sitting in a coffee shop by myself, watching a movie and meeting Shalini (who is now Mrs. Shalini Krishna) are the little but very exciting things I am looking forward to.

Seattle’s Best Coffee is my favorite coffee. On my birthday, we went to Rashid Mall in Al-Khobar and spend a hour having coffee. A coffee mug collector that I am, V bought me a coffee mug. Starbucks, according to me, is all snob value. In a small shopping mall near our house, we discovered a small coffee shop called ‘Coffee Shop’. I burnt my tongue while taking a large coffee-hungry sip. But the coffee was absolutely delicious. Steaming hot and mildly bitter.

Talking about hot…I like Shruti Hassan. She is hot and talented. Mothers looks and fathers talent did do a great deal for her. I haven’t seen her act but her singing is definitely good. And did I ever mention that I don’t like Deepika Padukone. She is so over-rated. I don’t like Aishwarya Rai either. As an actor, she is over-rated. As a model she is fabulous. And her fake accent…goshhhh it’s so fake.

There is this very interesting blog V came across and I loved too “SAND GETS IN MY EYES”. A must read. I have become an instant follower as I relate to it like all the other expats living here. Her writing is brilliant, funny and interesting.

...until they met

“Hi!” he said. She could hear his smile.

Even after four months, even before listening to his voice, she knew it was him.

“I am coming home” he said, “will you come to meet me?”

She trembled as she put down the phone. She wasn’t sure now if she was surprised or shocked. She wasn’t sure if the call was real or fiction.

She didn’t want to think of all that today. She didn’t want to question. She didn’t want to wonder. She just wanted to enjoy the moment. The moment that brought back blush to her cheeks, a smile to her face and life to her smile.

That night she slept like a baby. The questions and doubts could wait, until they met.

The Kite Runner

"For you, a thousand times over!”

Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner has been lying around at home for a year. V told me to read it but for some reason I kept pushing it. I finally picked it up 2 days ago.

Ofcourse it is a great book. Beautifully simple and wonderfully written. I feel a little guilty saying “I enjoyed it”. The suspense and the mystery of the story kept pushing me not to put the book down but a heavy heart and misty eyes made it difficult for me to not-put-it-down. It made me smile and the very next moment broke my heart. I wanted to know what happened in the next paragraph yet wished the book ended. Every page is a surprise, or should I say a new shock? Tears trickled down my cheeks quite a few times while reading it.

Childhood, innocence, friendship, jealousy, hope, pain, fear, regret and redemption. And more. All of them so beautifully knitted together.

And when I finished reading the book, I wished I hadn’t finished it. I am glad it ended but sad it’s over.

Too Hot to Handle

With the temperature fluctuating between 48 and 52 degrees Celsius, spending even 15 mins, at a stretch, in the kitchen has become next to impossible. The water from the tap, from morning to night is hot enough to make a cup of coffee and I am not exaggerating. And in the afternoons I probably can just make noodles in that water even without using the stove. And because I have the killing desire to keep my kitchen sink dish free, I bought a pair of gloves with which I can wash my dishes even when the tap water is hot.

V and I have finally started going for our brisk walks in the evening. The weather for sure is lousy but we couldn’t delay it any further. We realized we are growing out of our clothes and we don’t have enough space to stack any more clothes than we already have. By the time we are back from our walk, we are drenched in sweat. Literally. It’s even worse for me with my burkha over my clothes. When I am brisk walking I don’t like talking. That is one time I don’t want to talk. I need to be with myself and preferably with my headphones.

I am getting a new fridge in a day or two. And I got a new hair cut 2 days ago. This time an inch shorter than the shortest I ever had. I made it that short on impulse but am not regretting it. Some think it’s cute some don’t like it. I think it’s ok. And V thinks it’s cute.

In one of my previous posts I mentioned that I had a good I wasn’t ready to share yet. Here it is… My dear friend Shalini got married last week. I hate it that I couldn’t be there, but I couldn’t have been happier for her.

I have been in no mood to entertain any guests at home. I am not in a mood for formalities and pleasantries at the moment. I prefer sitting in my bedroom with a book, some music and a bottle of water. My landline also is off its hook for most part of the day. After I finish The Guardian by Nicholas Sparks, I have The Kite Runner by Khalid Hosseini and Danielle Steel’s Mirror Image and Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts to read. But am not sure which one to read next.

For some really odd reason, I have not been able to open my blogspot and Face Book from home. I don’t know why? I have asked one of my best friends Aruna to publish this and my previous post for me. This is it for now. Got to get back to The Guardian. The story has taken a twist and I need to know what the creep, Richard Franklin, is upto to next.

Discovering Peace

Sometimes you ‘experience’ moments that leave you with a feeling of fullness. A feeling that you cannot control. A feeling that you cannot explain. A state of bliss.

I felt that early this morning. When I was talking to my in-laws. They, finally, after more than a year of persuasion, have enrolled into the basic course of the “Art of Living”. Just talking to them about their experience made me feel at peace. Even without realizing, tears started rolling down. It was a spiritual moment.

Like everybody else, they were reluctant about the idea. They gave every excuse possible (which do not really qualify for an excuse), like anybody else would. I have never persuaded anybody for anything as much as I did my In-laws to do the course. I must admit that there were times when I thought there was no use explaining it to them. My mom-in-law always listened to me talk about it and a couple of times I heard her tell people “My daughter-in-law is a follower of Guruji.” I never missed the sense of pride that she had in her voice while mentioning it to others. We talked about it a lot of times but somehow her enthusiasm never lasted beyond the conversation.

Three days ago she had called saying that somebody had come home to tell that there was a class starting in the building right opposite to their house. That day, again, after cajoling her, I had decided that I was never again going to talk to her about it. It is not in my character to push someone so much.

Just 3 days of Pranayam and Sudarshan Kriya and my dad-in-law said, “I cannot explain the feeling” and my mom-in-law said, “I am at peace with myself.” Isn’t that amazing?
I just want to say…

“Amma and Papa, I am so glad that you two are doing the course. You deserve the tranquility and the new found sense of being. You have picked up a good habit; make sure you don’t give it up.”
Jai Guru Dev!!!

...not yet

She kept telling herself that it was all over.
...that she had to let go...that he didn’t love her anymore.

But she kept remembering his face, his smile and his voice. She remembered the way he touched her cheek and the way he played with her hair.

She knew she had to get over him, that she had to move on. But then she realised she wasn’t ready...not yet.
